Sabaku no Gaara | |
| History-as He knows it Name: Sabakuno, Gaara Age: 18 Rank: First-year student Home Base: Sand Callsign: Desert Shield 'Superpower': Sand/Earth manipulation+ Autodefense (the sand shield, win) Other special skills: -Can transport short distances underground rapily- though longer distances are possible, they're not recommended. -Speaks fluent English, Arabic, Spanish and Mandarin, and swears rather well in Japanese and Italian -Highly skilled with projectile weapons and guns, especially sniper rifles/rifles in general -Uncommonly strong for his size -Not so much a special skill, but... Shukaku, sort-of History: Gaara was the youngest child of the owner of the Sand Facility. His life began with a death- what he would later call the first life he claimed. His mother Karura- on her deathbed due to the sideeffects of the experiments and augmentation done to her unborn child- named him then died, leaving behind a child who would long for acceptance and love for the greater majority of his younger days. From the onset, it wasn't easy- it was obvious that whatever powers Gaara had been born with were unstable, as proved by the constant tremors that seemed to happen whenever the child had a fit of temper. So Gaara was isolated- treated with kid gloves and a healthy measure of fear. It wasn't until he was old enough to begin attempting to form relationships with those around him that he realized that none of them wanted anything to do with him- well, none but one. His uncle, his mother's brother and the only person who treated Gaara like the person he was instead of the monster they had created him to be. It was Yashamaru who taught him to rein in his temper- even when the sand that seemed to seep from the cracks in the walls to follow him wanted to lash out against his surprisingly strong will. Then when he was perhaps three or four, after a particularly unforgiving round of tests and training, Gaara fell asleep- and what awoke in his place was something no one had accounted for. The driving force behind the sand that defended Gaara even against himself, the bloodthirsty wickedness hiding behind Gaara's innocent green eyes- the split-personality called itself Shukaku, and unlike Gaara, it knew what it could do and how to do it. By the time the boy was brought back to himself, there were already people working on something to suppress Shukaku and keep Gaara awake. Trial, error and several bodies later proved that while keeping Gaara from sleeping was possible with the proper medication, pushing Shukaku back was not. Eventually, Gaara's growing inability to control himself made him more a liability than an asset- and so his father ordered him disposed of. It was Yashamaru who made the first attempt- a failed one, which resulted in the 'Ai' tattoo on Gaara's brow in a moment of grief and rage. After that moment, Gaara held nothing back- not in his words, not in his temper, not in his training- nothing. Since he had no need for sleep, he trained, read, memorized- perfected, all with the single goal of effectively killing his next target- and utterly decimating anything and anyone that got in between them. He wanted to learn hand-to-hand, to feel his targets and opponents die at his own bare hands, but because of Shukaku's Autodefense, he could not- so he redoubled his efforts with other things, like blades, guns and anything he could use to cause a bloody mess. He learned other languages only to be able to effectively communicate his death threats to those he disliked, and anything he didn't feel like learning was discarded, to perhaps be picked up again at a later date and learned out of boredom- after all, when one is always conscious, one has to run out of things to do sometime. However, despite all this, Gaara began to realize that there was something inherently... wrong. Despite being essentially able to do what he wanted, when he wanted and how he wanted, he wasn't happy. Not even killing brought him any sort of joy- just a grim sense of satisfaction, and even that was dampened by how little else accompanied the feeling. Help came in the most unusual of forms- one of his father's former premiere scientists (and in Gaara's book, almost as certifiable an old bat as he was)- the inexplicable Chiyo. She worked with him- feeling guilty about her part in the things done to him- and helped him learn to suppress Shukaku to the barest whisper in the very dark recesses of his mind. It took several years of hard work before Gaara was able to shut him out effectively enough to pretend that he didn’t exist- as well as a lot of Chiyo’s rather unique and ‘special’ brand of behavioral modification. Though he still has to keep himself awake- Shukaku will still overtake him otherwise. Nowadays, Gaara spends the time he isn’t training learning to speak different languages, reading, or finding new music to listen to (music, after all, does soothe the savage beast). His relationships, though few and fragile, are worked on often and to the best of his ability- as well as attempting, despite the fact that he knows he will never quite manage, to be, for all intents and purposes, a normal human being outside of his ‘work’- but then again, isn’t everyone? | |
